I am starting a week's vacation tomorrow. Work was extremely busy because of some logistics things and I worked more than 40 hours in 4 days. If I had not been taking Friday off, things would not have been intense. But they were.
So, today was my Friday so to speak. I thought Tuesday was Wednesday and Wednesday was Thursday, because my orientation to my deadline was it had to be done by the time I left work today.
I am concerned about how this is going to affect my orientation. Because Friday will be my first day off work. I am not sure how will orient myself. I do not have any in stone plans. Some vague plans to see a play, attend the Fourth of July celebration, and work around the house.

A Squall Blew Through Lubbock Today
I usually watch the weather at work, but today, I was really, really busy and just kept my focus on work. So, I was surprised late in the afternoon to see the storm clouds to the north and east from my office. I worked late, and a little after 5 PM, the power went off.
I work in a prison. They "racked up the farm" which means all offenders had to stay put where they were. They announced no one could enter or leave the building, and did a special count. They announced for staff to stay off the elevators. We have emergency power, which kept the emergency lights on, and about 20 minutes after the outage, the power was restored. We have a hospital on sight, and for that reason, as well as public safety issues (keeping the offenders incarcerated) we are a priority sight to restore power. It rained some. I watched the storm blow through: there was lots and lots of dust to the east, some thunder and lightning, and out much rain, but some. It was pretty well dried when I left work a couple of hours later.
The thing about a does squall like that is unless there is serious damage, there is little left over to even indicate it occurred. There was some water in low places on the road, but the ground is hot enough, and the wind strong enough that a couple of hours after the slight rain, there is no evidence of it.

An Unusual Phenomenon
This was a most unusual phenomenon. My computer room faces north. This evening, as I was sitting at the computer desk, about 8:30 PM, it became preternaturally dark. Not pitch black, but definitely darker than it should have been for that time of day. There was a severe storm warning to the north and west of town, about 15 or 20 miles away, heading west. So there was no reason for concern. But, I went outside to check it out. There was a large, dark cloud parked over my house and the houses around me, heavy to the north. The sky to the east, south and west was clear and sunny. I could see north beyond the cloud to a blue sky!
This cloud sat there until it became dark. I did not see any rain. I did not see any lightning or hear any thunder. And the cloud just sat there. Weather is weird sometimes.

Hmmm, an interesting commentary from the star of "The Free State of Jones." http://www.mystatesman.com/news/entertainment/movies/matthew-mcconaughey-talks-getting-into-free-state-/nrmRR/?ecmp=newspaper_email/.
This movie was not uplifting or a feel good movie, but it was sad and depressing. My problem with the reaction to the movie is some folks I know have said "I was not a part of what happened back then, why are you reacting this way now." These people do not get it. I was trying to explain to a coworker that this same kind of segregation and discrimination continues today. She did not see it. She has no idea what white privilege is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_privilege. I challenged her: Is there one bank in East Lubbock, yet look at the development in Southwest Lubbock. She could not answer.
I have lived in Lubboc since 1977k, and realize I have not done what I need to do to advance equality (gender, sexual, racial) during that time. Pope Francis says, first we pray, then we act. Hmmm.

Hold Me
This afternoon, as I watched the ballgame, Taki kept rubbing up against my feet and ankles. I decided that maybe she wanted to sit on my lap. Sometimes, she jumps on my lap, but more often than not, she tries to get my attention so I will pick her up.
So, I did pick her up and she sat with me for quite some time. She let me check her ears, and the sore under her chin which is healing, and although she did not like it, she let me check her mouth. I had to settle her down after that, but she stayed a while longer.
I am trying to work with her to get her used to being handled to check her ears and her mouth when we go to the vet. Last year, when we went, she became irate after having her temperature taken, so the vet said he would make a note on her chart not to take her temperature. Even with that, he was able to do some checks on her.

A Cool Night?
I went to the concert in the park tonight. I sat in the shade. There was a slight breeze. And I was cool. I had goose flesh. The local temperature was listed as 81°, which is warmer than my house is! Sometimes, when I have the ceiling fan running, and the air conditioner is running, 80° is cooler than I want.
I was able to crack the windows for the breeze tonight. It has been a few weeks since I have been doing that, it has stayed too warm too late. I appreciate the refreshing breeze tonight.
I know it is summer in Lubbock, but the breeze after sunset sometimes makes the night air very refreshing. That is a West Texas blessing.

Upsetting Haiku
June 25th was a Saturday. Saturday is supposed to be a sleep late, come and go but mostly be home kind of day. Well, I did sleep late. But then I went to the wedding of a co-worker. I arrived home for about 45 minutes, went to see a movie, go to a museum, and had dinner out before arriving home about 5:30 PM. Which would be about the time I would arrive home from work, on a good day.
My absence seems to have disconcerted Haiku. She seems not to be able to be comfortable, and settle down. She is not acting as if her mental state is altered, which has happened in the past. She is just restless. She wanted in the garage, but not for long. She sat in the computer room, but not for long. She has picked at her food. And she worries when I go to the bathroom. Sometimes, she just visits when I go to the bathroom, but tonight, she comes and fusses at me.
I will have a more at home day on Sunday, June 26. Maybe that will help.

Event Probability vs. Event Risk
I am reading Fault Line by Sarah Andrews, first published in 2002. Ms. Andrews writes a mystery series with the main character, Em Hansen, a geologist as the amateur sleuth. This book is set in Salt Lake City, and has a lot to do with earthquakes. I would not think of Salt Lake City and earthquakes, but they have the Wasatch Fault https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wasatch_Fault, so there you have it. The concern about an earthquake during the 2002 Olympics was noted http://www.sltrib.com/home/3791904-155/new-earthquake-study-says-utah-is. There was none, not during, not before, so the premise in the book is pure fiction, but it is interesting.
This article was recently published about the earthquake risk in Salt Lake City http://www.sltrib.com/home/3791904-155/new-earthquake-study-says-utah-is. It addresses some of the political issues that the book references.
One of the points made in the book is the difference between event probability and event risk. I have noticed a change in the way weather events are being forecast. I am not sure when this changed, but it has. Now, when there is a weather event, the forecasters on NBC http://www.nbc.com/ and The Weather Channel https://weather.com/ talk not so much about event probability but event risk. The definition: is this event going to happen, vs. how many people are going to be impacted. The latter is more dramatic, for sure. I am not sure if it makes more sense to broadcast this way. Except, reading the book, you appreciate the fact that event probability is not exact science while risk is estimated numbers if it does happen, and that is the real concern.

Nap Time
I do not like taking naps. I generally wake up confused, frightened, disoriented. I recall doing so when I was in junior high, and it took me the rest of the evening to get oriented. I have had a couple of similar experiences through the years. So, I do not take naps.
Something has happened, though, the last few weeks. Not so much during the work day, but sometimes in the early evening, and more frequently on a Saturday or Sunday, or when I have a day off, in the afternoon. If I sit back and relax, get comfortable, especially when I am reading, but maybe when I am knitting, I want to close my eyes and doze off. And sometimes, I do. Not for long. But this is something I have never experienced before.
I have been thinking about it. I was wondering if it could be attributed to a medication I am taking. That is possible. But I have been on most of the medications I take for more than a couple of years now. Except the Amlodipine, which was added a couple of months ago. Tiredness is a side effect of Amlodipine, but I take it at night, so I would think the tiredness would not still be affecting me the next afternoon, when these naps often occur. I wonder if it is an aging thing. Hmmm.
Weird.

The American Wind Power Center
Lubbock has the American Wind Power Center http://windmill.com/. I have been there before inside and out. Recently, they have opened a new exhibit center, which houses windmills and a miniature train display, miniature houses, and windmill artifacts. There is also a millstone exhibit.
These might seem strange inclusions in a wind power museum, but in some way, they make sense. Having grown up in the Northeast, I would not think of this, but the steam engines crossing the prairies needed to have a source of water, and sometimes, oftentimes, access to that water was only due to the construction of a windmill. The miniature train display is incomplete, has quite a bit of landscaping around it, and has a circular rise/decline, so the train can travel to a track well above the floor and back down. It has a trestle bridge, an old fashioned iron bridge, and a turn around so the train can travel back down to the floor display. There is a tunnel, with a train travelling in a loop on the display. I think having a train over head is a bit magical, making me think of Christmas displays of times gone by. I hope they continue to do the landscaping, including on the upper track.
Again, my thought of a mill location would be on some sort of waterway that would allow the water power to be harnessed by a water wheel. Not so in many places in the world, and windmills were used for this in areas where running water was not available. The place I think of the most using windmills is The Netherlands http://www.dutchnews.nl/features/2015/05/10-things-you-should-know-about-dutch-windmills/. I always thought the windmills were used for land reclamation, but obviously that was not the case.
This trip to the Wind Power Center opened my mind and educated me, which is what a museum is supposed to do. So, I would say this museum is a success!

Movie Day
I went to see the movie, "The Free State of Jones" http://stxmovies.com/freestateofjones/ today. It was a good story, but it was a sad story, because in the end, Newt Knight could only help a few people to freedom. And he did not really impact racism in a big way. But he did impact it. But it was a noble story, because he was a man that had principles and stuck to them.
As I was driving, after having seen the movie, I heard the NPR interview with the writer and director Gary Ross http://www.npr.org/2016/06/25/483537325/telling-the-story-of-a-confederate-deserter-in-free-state-of-jones. I thought it interesting that he said he could have ended the story when they raised the American flag, but the story of conditions and Newt Knight's fight after the war were not so "feel good." But noble.
This link will lead you to the "true story." An interesting story. Based on fact.

Trump's Real Reason for Running for President?
Donald Trump went to Scotland, to promote his golf course in Turnberry. The press followed, and the United States citizens footed the bill for his Secret Service security detail. His trip was to tout the Trump golf course. It coincided with the "Brexit" vote in the United Kingdom, a referendum to decide whether or not to leave the European Union https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/jun/24/donald-trump-hails-eu-referendum-result-as-he-arrives-in-uk. So, this is my question. Is this the real reason Donald Trump is running for President of the United States.
The truth is, although he is this self-proclaimed business tycoon, he has experienced bankruptcies, law suits, and questionable business practices. He admits himself if he does not like the work done for him, he does not pay, yet tries to hire the same companies again.
So, here is my take. I think Trump has seen all of these people in politics who enter with moderate or affluent standards of living and leave politics, or at least leave their elected positions with untold wealth. Is this a scheme to promote his businesses?
Who knows. But he is doing just this, and strategically landed himself in the United Kingdom at the time of the Brexit vote. Who is he trying to influence? What is he trying to pull off here? I am suspect of him.

Time Warp 2016
So, I went to the Drum Corps International Premiere show tonight at Cinemark. It started at 7:30 CDT, which sounded late. But that was correct. So that puts it starting in Indianapolis, Ind. at 8:30 EDT. Well, my prepaid ticket had the correct local time on it, so I showed up on time!
When they showed the schedule, it really flashed on the screen (why do they do that? A lot of things they showed on the screen were not on the screen long enough to finish reading it ). The last band was shown as due to play at 10:04 PM. So throughout the show, I kept trying to reconcile how a seven band performance, when each time slot is about 16 minutes long, could last 3 hours. Well, dummy, imagine my surprise when I left the theater and it was not yet 10 PM. Of course, the magic of time zones prevailed!
That was a nice surprise. I really was expecting to get home about 10:30 PM or close to 11 PM. It was not that the hour was so late, but when I go out at night, it takes me several hours to wind down before I can go to sleep. And I was worried about getting home that late and then trying to wind down. As it is, I am doing okay in the wind down department, and will not get to bed much later than I normally do.

Drum Corps International 2016
Tonight was the opening of the Drum Corps International http://www.dci.org/ season. I enjoy watching marching bands, but sometimes the "stories" these bands tell are a little esoteric, abstract or surreal. But I enjoy the music, the show and the fanfare. So, I went. It was a good show, and I arrived home sooner than I had thought I would. So that was nice. There was not much of a crowd in the theater. My experience has been that the premier show is not very full, but the finals show is. I think the reason for that is it is in early August, when the high school bands are starting practice, so they attend as a group to watch examples of good marching bands! How fun for these kids.
A colleague of mine sometimes attends, and in the past, has attended with her daughter who is a marching band director. Her daughter could make comments about what we saw that were so knowledgeable, it made the viewing that much more enjoyable. But, I had a good time tonight.

I Love Paper Maps
I love paper maps. So, I am not sure how I ended up looking at this website http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/culturebox/2012/01/the_best_american_wall_map_david_imus_the_essential_geography_of_the_united_states_of_america_.html?wpsrc=kwfacebookdt&kwp_0=157304&kwp_4=659980&kwp_1=338186 about the best paper map we will ever see. It was made by one man.
I went online to the website http://www.imusgeographics.com/usa-maps to look at the maps. They sure do like their maps, judging by the price for which they sell.
I am not going to spend that much money for a map.

Who is Neil deGrasse Tyson
So, who is Neil deGrasse Tyson https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_deGrasse_Tyson and why is he so popular? I know what his credentials are. l love listening to his explanations of science, and I love the entertainment factor he brings to science. The critics would say he cheapens science by his entertainment factor. I disagree. I think his ebullient character and media persona serve as wonderful ambassadors to awaken an interest in science in children and adults.
My Post on Facebook
My Facebook people do not read my posts; I know some people who read my posts who do not read my Facebook page. I am including the link here https://www.facebook.com/joyce.n.badger. I can copy what I wrote here:
I don't post often, but recently, I have seen several things that speak to my beliefs and values. Several have come from my friend Mary, and I appreciate her posts very much.
I am honored to be on the board of directors of Catholic Charities, Diocese of Lubbock. Usually, each board meeting starts with Mass. Often, the celebrant is Bishop Placido Rodriguez. His homilies generally reflect on the fact that we serve to ensure social services to those who need it in our diocese. His message usually focuses on the fact that the Word, which is prayer, urges us to act in service.

The two posts I made tonight send us the same message: first we pray, then we act.
I would be a better person if I could remember not to let my concern stop with prayer. Even small acts of service help.
I am not sure how to show or link what I posted on Facebook. So, I hope these links work.

Bobbing Heads
I know you have seen it. When you watch the news, or live sports reporting on the news, or weather, and there are reporters in remote sights, they stand there and nod their heads until it is there turn to talk. I have to guess that the nodding head is a universal signal that they are hearing the comments of the anchor person. I have to guess this because I see this motion on local news, and on national news and even national sporting events and weather forecasting shows.
But this bobbing head does something to me: It makes me think of a bobblehead doll http://www.bobbleheads.com/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobblehead. To me, it diminishes the authority and credibility of the reporter, and I just think about the bobbing head instead of the story about which the reporter is commenting, no matter how serious it is. I can edit that, if I need to, in order to focus in the actual story. But the bobbing head irks me, no matter what.

The Microwave Clock
The microwave has a digital clock. Some of the lights on it have dimmed, so a ten looks like an 11, for example. This is a little disconcerting, but it does not affect the functioning of the microwave, because the timer function is not effected. I have plenty of other clocks in the house, but sometimes I rely on the microwave clock. I just have to adjust me recognition of the time.
Computer Fix
Some weeks ago, after an automatic Windows update, when I tried to open the Internet browser from my email, I was directed to something other than my regular browser. This concerned me at first, but I explored this, and it seemed to be okay. I do not do this often, but over time, I evidently do it more than I realize I do.
Thursday night, another automatic Windows update was occurring. I remember, because when I tried to sign onto the computer, I could not at first, and had to wait for some time. When I did finally get onto the computer, I had some trouble. I blamed it on yet another unwanted Windows update.
But in truth, I had been dealing with my computer slowing down recently, mostly when I was using the Internet. Email and offline activities were just fine, so I did not think it was a virus. But I did not know what to do about the Internet. Because I had been having some problems, and keep getting notices about needing to run Toshiba updates, I had decided to work on this next month, while I was on vacation. I still might.
But, looking through email today, I clicked on a link to view something in my browser. And I was poking around on the alternate Internet access, which also did not seem to be working okay. I clicked on tabs, and realized that every time I had accessed the Internet this way, even though I closed the browser, it did not actually close the tab. After spending quite some time closing all of these tabs, I went back to the other link I use to access the Internet, and guess what? Things were working much, much better!
Yeah!

A New Chair
I have been thinking about buying another office chair for the computer room. More often than not, and for years, the cats have laid claim to the padded office chair I have. So, they are on the padded chair, and I am on the metal folding chair that has a padded cushion. It is not the most comfortable chair I own.
I have over loaded the office with furniture and equipment. I have a desktop PC, and a notebook that are very slow to use. And, I have a notebook that I can use. I have a defunct printer that has only been defunct about 1-2 months ago. I have a roll-top desk, a computer desk, 2 bookshelves, an area for a kitty litter box. And a folding antigravity lounge chair. I use my anti-gravity lounge chair to relax and get some comfort, even in an upright position.
Today, after work, I went to a meeting at the Catholic Charities Resale Center in Lubbock, They have recently accepted a donation of a hundred office chairs. I bought one for my office, to replace the metal folding chair. This was fortuitous. I have been thinking about replacing the metal folding chair with an office chair. Most recently, Office Depot had a sale on office chairs, and I almost bought one for $60. But did not.
So, I was late getting home, as after the meeting, I stopped at Subway http://www.subway.com/en-us and bought a salad for dinner. When I got home, no cat was waiting for me at the door. My punishment for being late. I took the groceries and lunch bags into the house. Then, I moved the chair into the house, having unloaded it from the Vue before I brought the Vue into the garage.
When I returned to the house, the cats were on the new chair, interested, and guarding it so I could not move it into the office. Until they gave me the say so.
I replaced the metal folding chair with the new office chair, and found the new chair as comfortable at home as it was at the Catholic Charities Resale Center. I had some chores to do that were best done spread out on the dining table. When I returned to the computer room, Haiku had taken up residence on the new chair, and was not about to give it up. Much to the consternation of Taki. Guess what, I need to go back to Catholic Charities and buy another chair.
Oh well, my cats are smarter than I am, and I know there will be plenty of chairs to chose from at the Catholic Charities Resale Center.

Thanks for the comment
Thanks for the comment about Norton Anti-virus. I did not mean to imply that the Norton anti-virus was doing anything wrong, because I thought it was doing its job as it should. I realize that when it scans files on my computer, it will shut some down. My comment is directed to the programs that do not recognize my password because my account has been idle for an extended period of time. While I understand the security, it is an inconvenience
to me.
I was trying to comment on the comment, but could not figure out how. Hence, another posting.

Taki and the Blanket
I have written before about Taki dragging an afghan around the house. The last few weeks, she has been very busy doing this. A couple of times I have seen her, and I think, when that happens, she is worried she is doing something wrong. I do not say anything. I just let her. I do move the afghan around, because often it ends up in places where I can trip over it. But I am glad to see her having some fun, or being active, or whatever.
She had stopped dragging the afghan around for a long time, but as I said, resumed the activity just recently. Hmmm.

Sign On ... Again
My Toshiba Satellite computer that I purchased in 2014 came with a discounted offer for Norton Security http://www.nortonsecurityonline.com/ns-us/?mv1=aUS092&d1=c&pk_campaign=adA&gclid=Cj0KEQjws_m6BRCv37WbtNmJs-IBEiQAWKKt0PldT8PmNcmiF3UEFJCO22oZpTrvIMTdu445CHEkckgaAlIA8P8HAQ, which I accepted, and have continued at full price since then. Norton is supposed to complete a weekly scan of my computer on Sunday, and I believe it does. Today, I received a notice that it needed to scan again. I always do the scan when I am told an additional scan needs to occur. I mean, really, I am paying for the service, why would I not allow the scan.
This scan was one of THOSE scans that results in all of my signed in Internet accounts being closed. So, when I access something like Facebook, or Netflix, or my Blog, I have to sign in again. So far, I have not had problems with passwords, although this situation in the past has seen me have many problems with passwords. Because I have a lot of Internet accounts that I have marked as "remember this password" and many that I just keep signed in. And in that case, it seems that if I have not used a password in a long time, the password I know is correct (I have written down, no matter what security gurus tell us) is no longer recognized as valid. I understand that from a security perspective, but it is very aggravating from a convenience perspective (I mean, why would I stay signed in if I did not want to be recognized quickly by this account?)
This is an inconvenience built into the system of trying to provide security to our computers. Oh well, we all have to put up with it.

A New TV Show
On Late Night with Stephen Colbert he and his guest Bill O'Reilly touched briefly on O'Reilly's upcoming TV show "Legend and Lies: The Patriots" http://www.foxnews.com/shows/l-and-l. I watched a clip. I am not sure it is so different than the stories we already know about the Patriots and the Revolutionary Heroes.
This is a show I might want to watch. The link above does not indicate a broadcast schedule. This link http://waitwith.us/legends--lies-season-2-3813/ indicates it has already started. But there is a link that will allow a link schedule to be sent to my email. So, I signed up. We shall see.

Tired
I have been waking up earlier lately. I have had some changes in habits that I think have contribute to that. The habit changes also contribute to more energy. So, today, when I woke up early, got up and got ready for work, it was earlier than I usually leave for work. I did anyway, got there early, and got my work done. It was not a crammed packed day, and I had some situations that took longer than they should have, but this did not bother me, as I had the time.
After work, I ran a few errands that took about an hour and three-quarters. I got home, fed the cats, exercised, then cleaned up to run one more errand that I could not run sooner. By the time I was almost done with my exercise, I was exhausted. My feet burned. I was very tired.
But, I kept going. I was not in real pain, and when I stopped the exercise, there was relief all around. I ran the errand, and had dinner, but again, felt very tired.
I am still very tired. I want to watch The Late Show with Stephen Colbert http://www.cbs.com/shows/the-late-show-with-stephen-colbert/. He had a very interesting conversation with Bill O.Reilly, who was originally booked on the show to talk about his series Legend and Lies, The Patriots http://www.foxnews.com/shows/l-and-l.

Texas Tech NCAA Baseball
Texas Tech NCAA Baseball has advanced to the final 8 of the NCAA World Series of College Baseball. The series will be played in Omaha, Nebraska. This is the second time in 3 years that Tech has advanced to the World Series. They have done well the last 3 years, have a great coach in Tim Tadlock http://www.texastech.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/tim_tadlock_786414.html, and have World Series experience. This is great news for Texas Tech. Go Tech!
The Tragedy in Orlando, Florida
The shooting at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida http://www.cnn.com/2016/06/12/us/orlando-nightclub-shooting/ that resulted in 49 victims dead, 53 injured, and the perpetrator killed, is described as a hate crime and terrorism, or both. It was aimed at the LGBTQ community, and carried out by an American born man who was reportedly radicalized on the Internet. His parents have a apologized. Much of the country has rallied to indicate some kind of support. I did not find out about vigils in Lubbock until after they were over with, when I heard about them on the late Lubbock news.
Our leaders reacted variously. http://www.cnn.com/2016/06/12/politics/orlando-shooting-obama-political-reaction/ Hate and racism just feeds the kind of behavior that was exhibited by the perpetrator today. The more we accept hate and racism, the more we damage our country. We are better than that!

Breakfast Food
The Jimmy Dean corporation is advertising a new breakfast product, called frittatas http://www.jimmydean.com/products/delights/delights-turkey-sausage-and-bacon-frittatas#nutritional-info. The TV commercials claim that these are made with real ingredients. This is a claim a lot of products make, and I always wonder what unreal or fake ingredients are.
I admit, I purchased a package. I want to try them. I generally have fruit and juice for breakfast, but sometimes, especially if my dinner the night before is light, I want a breakfast that is a little more substantial. So, I thought I would try these. We shall see.

A Storm Tonight
It was grey for much of the day, but the sun came out from time to time and it warmed up, but it was never a bright sunny day. Late in the day, I sat in the yard: there was shade from the pine trees and the neighbor's tree, and I read outside for a while. Later, I ate dinner outside. The air was fresh, and as the evening progressed, the breeze made for a bracing night. Not cold, just cool and refreshing.
I decided to move inside a little before it became really dark outside, and within minutes of moving inside, I saw lightning, which would be my cue to move inside, anyway.
The weather forecasters are telling us there is lightning (and thunder) in the area, and rain around Lubbock, but not probably in central Lubbock (which is where I live.) That is okay, I think, although with the recent heat, rain would help the plants outside.
I can see lightning to the north and east, which is the direction the windows in the computer office face. From the weather maps, the storms are more intense in a band to the south, southwest and southeast of Lubbock.
Let us hope for some rain.

Taki and Hummus
Taki and Hummus sounds like a TV show, don't you think? It is not.
Earlier tonight, I was having a snack of carrots dipped in hummus (flavored with rosemary and sea salt.) This might gross you out, so do not blame me if it does. I warned you.
When I eat at the table, one or both cats usually check out my food. Today, Taki checked out the hummus. She sniffed, and sniffed, and sniffed. Then she took a taste. And she sat there, and gagged. I moved the hummus so she would not spit in it. She did not spit, just gagged.
Then she ate some of the dry food that I keep on the table. Then she left.
Too funny. I wish I had had my phone with me so I could have made a video, but leaving the table to get the phone might have chased her off.
Oh well, she was funny sampling the hummus.

Jury Summons
I received a jury summons in the mail today. I am really impressed with the new system: You can "check in" on line, or the week before your service, in person, at the jury pool room. You can request an exemption or to reschedule your week of service on line. They will contact you regarding your status by text or email. This is really a wonderful use for the internet!
Smart Phone
I did not think I would really benefit by changing to a smart phone, and my friends and colleagues kept telling me I would wonder how I got along without it. They were right! A perfect example occurred tonight. I missed the local weather when I got home from work, and quickly fed the cats and headed out to meet some friends for dinner.
On the way, I watched a small cloud cell approach Lubbock. Before I went into the restaurant, I checked the local weather, and saw that the front was still miles away, and moving East, so probably the heaviest part of the weather would pass North of us.
After dinner, we went to the Barnes and Noble http://www.barnesandnoble.com/ Mystery Book Club. I checked the local weather again before I went into Barnes and Noble. During our book club, one of the members had the local weather on her Ipad or tablet. This allowed us to keep an eye on the weather: There was concern for serious, damaging weather, which did not develop, at least yet.
Checking the weather, the storms have now moved to the South and East, and will, for now, miss Lubbock. Oh well. At least I can keep on top of it!

The Night Air
This is the time of year that I enjoy. The night air is very cool, and I can open the windows in a locked position, and air the house out over night. Even though the day is warm, the overnight temperatures drop enough to cool the house off. Some days, the house stays cool enough that the air conditioner does not come on until after noon, even sometimes well into the afternoon, depending on the ambient temperature.
Also, because of the trees in my yard and my neighbor's yard, I have shade for my patio in the early evening. This allows me to sit outside and enjoy the evening air, especially when there is a breeze, because that makes the air temperature very comfortable.
When I first bought my house, and Mack was alive, I felt safe to sit in my back yard until the wee hours of the morning. Or, I might wake up in the middle of the night, and not be able to go back to sleep, so I would sit in the back yard and listen to music or read. And of course, Mack joined me. He really liked to be outside in the back yard. So much so, that I would sit out in inclement weather, just to be outside with him. I do not do that anymore. I do not have a dog, and the character of my neighborhood has changed enough that I do not feel as safe outside late at night. Isn't that sad? But it is real.
But, I still like the fresh night air.

O Canada
Tonight I am watching the Stephen Colbert show on CBS http://www.cbs.com/shows/the-late-show-with-stephen-colbert/. He did a spoof on O Canada, the Canadian national anthem. What sparked this is because he said that the Canadian Parliament is changing the anthem to make it gender neutral http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/canada-anthem-gender-neutral_us_57548785e4b0ed593f14b9c8. The running joke is that Mr. Colbert very often talks about Canada and Canadians. His comments are jibes at how neutral, polite, self-effacing and unexciting Canadians are. And how nice they are. Including to people who do not treat them well. So, someone sang a spoofed up version of O Canada on the show tonight. And, as I laughed, I told myself while this is funny, it is not very reverent.
Which got me to thinking that being reverent is part of the Boy Scout Law:
http://www.scouting.org/About/AnnualReports/PreviousYears/2013/2013_oath_law_mission.aspx
Which got me to thinking that being reverent is not a value that our current society considers to be important.
Wouldn't our world be much better if we remembered to be reverent?

Shopping Made Easy
A co-worker is getting married later this month. She is registered at Bed, Bath and Beyond http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/. I went shopping today. I picked up a registry at customer service in the store, and was given instructions on how to use the registry. It was not much different than registries at other stores I have shopped before, and wish someone had given me these instructions many, many years ago, because it took me a little bit to figure the process out on my own. The store has an in-store free gift wrap area, too.
Well, after checking things out in the store, I chose an item that needed to be ordered. It was an item that was the sort of gift I would have selected for this person, if she were not registered somewhere. The item would be delivered in 3-7 work days, plenty of time before the wedding. I had the option of delivery to my house or to the bride's house. I chose the latter. They offered free gift wrap, and a card enclosed. I opted for it all.
This is shopping made easy. On top of all that, I had a 20% off coupon. But, the associate that helped me gave me a coupon, and told me to save mine to use on something else!
This is customer service to the max! I was amazed! I had never been treated that nicely in a store, or if I have, it has been so long that I cannot recall it! Will I remember this, the next time I need a gift for someone, registered or not? You bet I will!

A Cool Night
I had a medical appointment today near the end of the day, and was able to leave work, get the medical work done, and get home early. I took care of the cats, exercised, ate my dinner, and did some computer work. I watched some TV that I wanted to watch, then moved out to the backyard: The air was fresh, the breeze was refreshing, and although the air temperature was in the 70°s, it was a cool refreshing evening outside. I read for quite a while before returning inside to watch the news and get ready for bed. Getting ready for bed includes winding down watching late night TV.
But, being outside in the cool, breezy air convinced me to open the house windows earlier than I normally do. I like that the night air is so cool it will cool off the house overnight and give me a good cool night for sleeping.
Later in the summer, this will not happen. But for now, it is to be enjoyed!

Wrist Support
I had a gel-filled wrist support for my computer keyboard(s). I have had it for years. I do not use it any more because I no longer use that keyboard. Except, if I am reading on the computer, and using the mouse, which is on the right side of the desk pullout, and for which I have a wrist support, my left wrist still used the other wrist support.
Well, some very long time ago, the fabric on the wrist support split, and the foam and gel leaked out. Minimally for a long time. In the last few weeks, the gel has really been leaking out, and getting on my arm and else where.
I had enough tonight. I trashed the wrist support. I got out the Goo-Gone http://googone.com/Home, and cleaned off the gooey surfaces. It was a chore well done. And one that should have probably been done a long time ago!

A Night to Remember
The major fundraiser for Catholic Charities, Diocese of Lubbock, is "A Night to Remember." It is a giant cocktail party with a silent auction, live auction, and give away drawing. It was a nice night tonight. The food was good: I ate shrimp and crab, among other things. The variety was good.
The prizes were good, but I did not bid on anything. There was not really anything I could justify. I could just give the agency money if I wanted. But the fervor and excitement were missing. That is too bad. A climactic ending gives momentum for the next year. Something we need to talk about for the future.

Time Warp
It is Sunday, and I awoke early today and did not sleep in. So, it felt like my day was longer than many of my weekend days of late. I have been sleeping in a lot. I am just so mentally tired from work, that I want the extra sleep on the weekend, although I hate losing the time to sleep.
Today, I got up early. And was energetic enough to be productive today. It made the day feel long, because I got a lot done. It felt good. But it made me feel like time was protracted today. That happens to me sometimes, when I get a lot done.

People are So Rude
So, I went to the Silent Wings Museum for the "USO Show." The performers were song and dance performers from the Moonlight Directions http://www.lubbockmoonlightmusicals.org/moonlight-directions/ and the band called the Funessence are something like that. It is a newer band in Lubbock, and plays big band style music.
The band started the show, although there was no announcement. Many people in the audience continued to talk during their playing. That is so rude!
But am I surprised? No. People access their cell phones during movies, in the middle of dinner, in churches. Years ago, I went to a funeral. There were several doctors in the gathering, and I noticed them pausing at the entrance of the church to silence their phones and/or pagers. But the soccer moms did not, and one even paced back and forth at the back of the church talking on the phone while the service was continuing! She did not even have the common courtesy to step outside the room! How rude!
The band started the show, although there was no announcement. Many people in the audience continued to talk during their playing. That is so rude!

D Day Remembered
I went to the Silent Wings Museum for the D-Day activities http://www.mylubbock.us/departmental-websites/departments/silent-wings-museum/special-events-, particularly the "USO Show" presented by Moonlight Directions. There was a standing room only crowd. It was a very good show. Hard to believe these are high schoolers.
The museum admission was free for the D-Day celebration. That was nice, too.
