The Hat

There have been times in my life when I wore a hat. It was usually a fad, or for warmth in winter.   Since living in West Texas, I have seldom used a hat, until recently, when I have been out kayaking.  I like a nice wide brimmed hat to help with the sun, and the glare of the sun from the water.

I have a dorky hat that offers a little protection, and has a wire in the hatband, which helps the band to mold to my head, and helps the hat to stay on in high winds. I purchased a straw hat that came with a stampede string. This helps the hat to stay on, but mostly if the wind is coming at me.  If the wind is coming at my back, the hat blows forward.  I purchased the hat for very little at the fair, and the straw on the crown has started wearing out.  It needs to go away.

I went to a local hardware store today, looking for a pet carrier, which they had on sale. When I walked in, I saw a display of straw hats, felt hats, cowboy hats, camouflage hats, and what have you.  I found a wonderful straw hat with a wide brim all the way around, and ribbon ties!  It was less than $7. What a deal!  I was not in the market for a hat today, but I knew I needed a new one for this summer!  It was sort of an impulse buy, because I was not in the market for a hat today.  But how could I pass it up?
