Ceiling Fan Chains

When Taki was a wee tiny baby, just barely big enough to claw her way up the comforter onto the bed, she displayed a fascination for the ceiling fan in my bedroom.  I will say, as she has aged, she continues to display a fascination for ceiling fans, and will sit and watch one turn for a long time.

But the ceiling fan above my bed had a special fascination for her...There were two very long chains extending from the ceiling fan, to within inches of the mattress. The chains were so long because they had a couple of extensions on them.  I had visions of a little kitty grabbing the chains hard enough to pull the ceiling fan down. When she was a wee tiny baby, that may not have come to pass. Even so, I removed the lowest extension, and knotted the chains to shorten their length, to keep her from grabbing onto to them.

But she is a big, big cat now. And just the other day, I saw her not only jump up to grab the chains, but actually hit them!  So, I tried knotting them higher, but after a while, the knot slipped, and the chains were once again within reach.  So, I disconnected those extensions, which left just a very few inches of chain hanging down from the fan.  I can control the fan from a rheostat on the wall. This is a much safer option for all of us, because with her current size, I suspect she could pull down the ceiling fan.  I am just thankful nothing has happened to date.
