I do not know much about antiques, and really am not a person who would own a lot of antiques. In fact, until the last few years, I could have cared less. But I have started watching Antiques Roadshow on PBS http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/roadshow/index.html. I enjoy watching it for several reasons. It is educational. There is a lot of history, and the stories are wonderful.
I love stories. I love listening to people's life stories, how things evolve and relate and inter-relate. It is always exciting also, when someone has a really exciting piece that they knew little or nothing about. Sometimes the excitement is the price, but just as often, it is the uniqueness, or the historical value, or just the story.
