I had a strange experience Saturday when I was shopping. A gentleman approached me and told me I looked very familiar, and asked me if I worked at Montford. He then asked me my name. I was hesitant to answer, and he said "You didn't feed me." I told him I did work at Montford, and did not want to reveal my name because I am very careful about giving out information. This man said he understood. He said he was at Montford shortly after we opened, but left, and spent 10 years in plumbing and then has moved to roofing. He told me his name was Bustamante.
I did tell him I was a social worker at Montford.
I did not remember this man as a correctional officer. But I also did not remember him as a patient. His response to my hesitance was polite and appropriate.
But this experience was disconcerting.
At work today, I asked about an officer named Bustamante. We had one, who left in 2008. Hmmm, not exactly in line with what I thought I heard on Saturday.
What surprised me a lot was how quickly he seemed to recognize me. My good friend reminded me that there are some people who recognize people quickly. She is right, she used to do this. When I taught religious education, did parenting classes, and did groups at work, I would learn the members names almost immediately. I made a concerted effort to do that. So, maybe he did remember my name honestly. But after so much time, it was weird.
