So the mayor of Albuquerque started a program that offered employment to people who are homeless but want to work. Granted, $9 an hour is not a living wage, and 5.5 hours a day, with no benefits does not provide a living wage. It is more than what that person who is homeless had. And, if someone is homeless and on Supplemental Security Income (SSI) through the Social Security Administration, because of a disability, as so many people who are homeless are, it probably does not mean they will lose all of their SSI benefits. So, maybe this is a good program. It is certainly innovative, and if it stops the city from writing citations on people who are homeless, it is probably well worth it.
