Drum Corp International
I got to attend the Drum Corps International preliminaries on August 9 this year. The shows were good, some were better than others. My favorites did not win, but it was a good show. I will go again next year if at all possible.

Big, Loud and Live 2017
Big, Loud, and Live https://www.fandango.com/dci2017:bigloud26live14_202428/movieoverview aired August 10, 2017 presented by Fathom Events https://www.fathomevents.com/. A colleague and I met up to watch the show. It was a very good presentation, lasting close to 5 hours, not counting waiting for the tallying of results, which we did not wait for.
But for close to 5 hours, we heard blaring drum corp music, which is enjoyable to listen to and the performances are fun to watch. But the music is loud, and jarring. Because of that, it takes me a long time to wind down after seeing a performance. So, I planned to take off from work on the 11th of August. The problem is, I need to get up early to be ready for the air conditioner/furnace replacers.
So now, I am home and have cleaned out the area for the air conditioner/furnace replacers to work, finished reading email, finished playing computer games, have had some wine, and am watching a second interesting movie, having already watched In the Heat of the Night http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061811/. Now I am watching The Bedford Incident http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058962/.
I like submarine movies, and thought I had seen The Bedford Incident before. But I do not remember anything about it. I do remember my father and brother talking about it when it came out, or maybe, they discussed the book. My father did not read a lot of books when we were growing up, but he liked a good military or historical thriller.
So, I am waiting to get sleepy enough to so to sleep. If I try lying down before I am sleepy, I just toss and turn, and waste sometimes the whole night trying to sleep. I try using relaxation breathing, and progressive muscle relaxation, but it does not work. This has been my life's history regarding sleep. It just is, and I have only had a few periods in my life when my sleep was better. But, I don't mind. Especially when I do not have to be on my best game the next day.

DCI 2017
DCI is Drum Corp International http://www.dci.org/. and tonight was the opening night of their season of competition. This is the 45th year of DCI. I have watched one or more of their competitions over the last 4 or 5 years, since I realized they were available on Fathom Events https://www.fathomevents.com/.
I went to the showing in town. I was surprised at how full the theater was. I was pleased that the audience clapped at the end of each performance, and sometimes, during the performance. Even though our applause did not reach DCI, it was good to acknowledge the quality of the performance.

Big, Loud and Live
Thursday night, a friend and I went to "Big, Loud, and Live." This was the preliminary finals for Drum Corp International http://www.dci.org/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=965779&SPID=166025&DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=33500&ATCLID=210491101. It was satellited into a local movie theater. It was long, it was late when we left, but it was fun to watch the various drum corps.
I like drum corps, marching bands, and brass bands. I just do.

Drum Corps International 2016
Tonight was the opening of the Drum Corps International http://www.dci.org/ season. I enjoy watching marching bands, but sometimes the "stories" these bands tell are a little esoteric, abstract or surreal. But I enjoy the music, the show and the fanfare. So, I went. It was a good show, and I arrived home sooner than I had thought I would. So that was nice. There was not much of a crowd in the theater. My experience has been that the premier show is not very full, but the finals show is. I think the reason for that is it is in early August, when the high school bands are starting practice, so they attend as a group to watch examples of good marching bands! How fun for these kids.
A colleague of mine sometimes attends, and in the past, has attended with her daughter who is a marching band director. Her daughter could make comments about what we saw that were so knowledgeable, it made the viewing that much more enjoyable. But, I had a good time tonight.

Drum Corps International 2015
I went to the satellite cast of Drum Corps International http://www.dci.org/ premier at a local movie theater. I thought it was a three hour broadcast, but it was a little under 2.5 hours. It was good. There were six bands performing, and while we were waiting for the scores, they showed the performance of last year's championship winner, the Blue Devils of Concord, Ca.
I enjoyed the performance tonight. There will be another broadcast in August, the start of the finals. If you are a real fan, you can join DCI and watch their webcasts. I am not that much of a fan, I think. But I will probably go to the next broadcast.
Who won tonight? The Cavaliers. I agree with that decision. Theirs was the best performance of the night.

Drum Corps International, 2015
The Drum Corps International https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/award-yogi-berra-presidential-medal-freedom-his-military-service-and-civil-rights-and-educational-activism opening night is being broadcast live in theaters across the country on June 17, 2015. Last year, I went to the broadcast, aired by Fathom Events, http://www.fathomevents.com/event/one-night-for-one-drop, but it was not live. This year, it is live. I am really excited about being able to attend this event. It will probably be long, and I may take the morning off from work, the next day.

Drum Corp International
So, tonight was the broadcast of Big, Loud and Live http://www.dci.org/schedule/ , a live presentation of the preliminary Drum Corp International tournament finals http://www.dci.org/about/ on Fathom Events http://www.fathomevents.com/event/.
Not familiar with Fathom Events? Neither was I until earlier this year. They offer opera and ballet, as well as sporting events,the drum corp events, and who knows what else. According to a colleague, who did not know I liked drum corp, they have been offering the drum corp events for a couple of years, at least. They basically satellite beam an event into a movie theater.
The first time I went to such an event, it was when Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me ? http://www.npr.org/programs/wait-wait-dont-tell-me/ aired by satellite. That was in the spring of 2013.
Earlier this year, I went to an Fathom Event of Drum Corp International. It was a taped version of their opening event. Which is where I discovered that my colleague liked drum corp.
I think this is a wonderful option for Lubbock and other locations around the country to receive various events. I will pay for what I want to view. It is very much like pay-per-view on TV, a little more expensive, but in a wonderful large screen, large sound setting.

Drum Corp International
Recently, when I was at a movie theater, they advertised an airing of a Drum Corp International http://www.dci.org/ event. Well, I love Drum and Bugle Corps as much as I love a brass band, so I was hooked, and I bought my ticket
It was interesting during my most recent trip to New England for the Crochier family reunion, that my oldest brother and I had similar memories about the Millers Falls Drum Corp http://home.earthlink.net/~andepaula/id5.html http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2209&dat=19520902&id=DYtjAAAAIBAJ&sjid=H3oNAAAAIBAJ&pg=6959,16044. My cousin now lives in the house that is attached to Redman Hall which was their home base. We recalled that they hosted parades and competitions, and played across the country.
Well, I went to the Drum Corp International event that was aired on June 23rd. I was surprised to see a colleague and her daughter in the audience. But it made sense. Her daughter is a band director for a high school in Austin, Texas. And, two of her daughter's students were in various bands, one of which was going to be aired during that show.
I learned that there is a large network of drum and bugle corps, they compete during the summer season nation wide, and the competitions culminate in finals. And, the finals have aired on the network that aired the show we were going to watch. My colleague and her daughter have been at many live performances. I recalled that some years ago, they made stop at AT&T Jones Stadium at Texas Tech. I attended the performance that was foreshortened by electric storms (thunder and lightning as well as rain.)
My colleague and I agreed we wanted to watch the next event that would be available to us, the Prelim, which will be performed August 7, 2014. It starts early, and is long, but it will be the best of the best. Most of the bands that performed for the show we watched were well polished with their performances, which is surprising, becausing usually, the bands improve their showmanship as the season progresses. But, maybe these will make the preliminaries for the finals.
The performances we watched this week were interesting. One was very strange, and was rated last. One was very magical and was only rated 4th. One was very historical and patriotic, and was rated first. Hmm. I am not sure agreed with the ratings, but I am not an expert.
This was a very fun activity. But, I had to leave work right at 5 PM to get home and feed the cats, then get to the theater, with just a few minutes to spare. So, part way through the performance, I started to nod off. And then, I started thinking about a junk food dinner (usually a fast food junk food meal for me is from Subway, but I was salivating for a Big Mack and fries.)
So, after the performance, I headed to MacDonald's, then went home for dinner, checking my blood pressure, doing my PT exercises, and finally, getting on the computer to read email, and do the various puzzles and games I work on daily to exercise my brain.
No wonder I was tired, but not ready to sleep. Going out for activities revs me up. Listening to about 2.5 hours of brass and drums really revved me up!
Even so, I finally wore out. So, I was too tired to work on a post last night. But, I am pleased to offer this tonight.
